Science

"A glimpse of this wonder can be the reward of a lifetime."

Intent

At the heart of our science curriculum is a deep sense of wonder at the created world and a commitment to exploring it with curiosity, integrity, and humility. We believe science enables children to discover the order, beauty, and intricacy of God’s creation, inspiring thoughtful and joyful engagement.

Rooted in our Christian values, we encourage pupils to learn with respect, compassion, and responsibility—valuing others’ ideas and recognising their role in caring for the world around them. Through enquiry and critical thinking, children develop both scientific understanding and an awareness of how their knowledge can contribute positively to society.

We aim to nurture confident, inquisitive learners who ask meaningful questions, persevere, and recognise the interconnectedness of living things. Guided by the principle to “do everything in love,” we seek to develop scientists who are thoughtful, ethical, and motivated to make a difference.

Implementation

Science is taught weekly as a discrete subject, ensuring consistent opportunities for pupils to develop knowledge and enquiry skills over time. Learning is carefully sequenced so that key concepts build progressively and prior learning is revisited and strengthened.

Lessons emphasise practical, enquiry-based approaches, enabling pupils to investigate, observe, and draw conclusions through hands-on experiences, alongside clear teacher guidance. A balance of structured teaching and independent exploration supports both understanding and confidence.

A respectful and collaborative classroom culture underpins all learning. Pupils are encouraged to listen carefully, work cooperatively, and take responsibility for the world around them. Teaching is adapted to meet the needs of all learners through effective questioning, modelling, and support, while key vocabulary is explicitly taught to deepen understanding.

Cross-curricular links are used where meaningful to strengthen learning connections. Through this consistent and purposeful approach, pupils develop secure scientific knowledge alongside the attitudes needed to apply it responsibly.
